Panoramatiks was responsible for the exhibition planning, experience design, and data visualization for the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art’s first-anniversary project, “Art in Love with Design ♡ Design Envious of Art,” held from April 15 to June 18, 2023.
This exhibition marked the first time the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art presented both art and design—two key pillars of its activities—side by side in a parallel showcase. Instead of guiding visitors through a predetermined narrative, the exhibition was designed as a participatory experience, allowing visitors to create their own story from their unique perspectives.
The exhibition featured over 70 artists and works from the 1950s through the 2010s, a collection representative of postwar Japanese art and design. Visitors received handouts to record their personal interpretations of each work, deciding whether to view it as “art” or “design.” Tablets stationed throughout the exhibition space allowed visitors to vote, and at the end of their experience, they could view a visualization of the voting results.
The exhibition aimed to provide a way for visitors to experience the “heart” (♡) of each piece—whether it felt more like design or art—and encouraged them to answer the question, “Is this design? Or is it art?”
The voting results from the visitors can be viewed at the following URL. (*Japanese only)
